Symbolism in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman Essay

Symbolism in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman In his play, Death of a Salesman, Arthur Miller employs many symbols to illustrate the themes of success and failure. They include the rubber hose, the tape recorder, and the seeds for the garden. These symbols represent Willys final, desperate attempts to be successful and the failure he cannot escape. The rubber hose represents both success and failure. It is attached to the gas main in Willys house and provides him with the opportunity to commit suicide. Willy sees this as a way to finally do something for his family to make up for years of disappointment. He will no longer be a burden to them when he is gone, and they will remember him in a positive light. Yet Willy†¦show more content†¦He fires Willy, all the while playing with his new toy. While Willy is experiencing ultimate failure in the business world, the loss of his job, Howard is focusing on his own success, represented by the tape recorder. The tape recorder also reflects Willys inability to learn new technologies and adapt to society. Willy is an old-fashioned guy who made no attempt to change or evolve. He cannot even figure out how to turn off the tape recorder when he is left alone with it. Instead, he panics and calls for Howard to come help him. Not only is Willy afraid of new technology, but also he honestly believes that the old ways are best. Even when it becomes obvious to everyone else that his outdated sales tactics arent working, he still believes in them. Once again, Willys inability to change with the times leaves him unhappy and unsuccessful. In spite of all of his setbacks, Willy still has hope things will improve for his family. The seeds that he plants in the backyard garden represent this. By being successful at this one little thing, Willy will show that he cannot be written off. He will prove that everyone is wrong about him; he can be successful at something. And the garden will be something nice for his family to enjoy. Yet Willys seeds of hope are doomed to failure. The Natural of Semantic Change Free Essays

SEMANTICS THE NATURE OF SEMANTIC CHANGE Presented by group 9: Riva Nugraha Jiwa 0910733154 Alfi Nurhidayati 1010731008 Nadia Turrahmi 1010732014 ENGLISH DEPARTMENT FACULTY OF HUMANITIES ANDALAS UNIVERSITY INTRODUCTION 70 years ago, Edward Sapir introduced a new concept of linguistics. He said that language moved on every time and then created their own forms and never static. Every word, every grammatical element, proverbs, sounds and accents configured which was changed slowly and this was the ways how a language could long lasting. We will write a custom essay sample on The Natural of Semantic Change or any similar topic only for you Order Now This concept of language made the other linguists interested. The change of meaning could happen because of some reasons, according to Millet a meaning could change easily because of the discontinuous from one generation to the other generations, the blur of meaning, the lost of motivation, the appearance of polysemy, there are some ambiguous contexts, vocabulary structures, and so on. The nature of semantic change can be divided into some categories, metaphor, metonymy, popular etymology, ellipsis, and also some consequences change of meaning. SEMANTIC CHANGE A. The nature of semantic change Aksioma Leibniz said â€Å"natura non facit saltus† that means the nature changed indirectly and slowly, this sentence also can we applied in change of meaning. Every changing had their each reason and always related and associated from the old meaning into the new meaning. One of semantics tradition looks up meaning as â€Å"the interrelationship between name and meaning†. So, we can conclude that change of meaning divide into two types: change of meaning based on association of meaning-meaning, and also name-name. Every type can be differs into similarity ad contiguity. . Metaphor Metaphor is important in language because it can make them more creative and aesthetics, it is common in literary field such as poem. Metaphor has some functions in everyday life, there are as the motivation, expression ways, as the source of synonym and polysemy, to fill the blank in vocabulary, and the way to express the emotion, etc. The structure of metaphor is simple, it always said one thing is another thing. It does not use the word as, like, and comparative words and other, this case make the reader try to find the similarities. For example: a) Her home is a prison, in this case her home have same characteristic of prison, we can imagine that she can’t leave her home, she tapped inside, and maybe afraid of the outside. b) The police man let him off by a yellow card, in this sentence ‘yellow card’ refers to warning, the original sense is in soccer player a yellow card that the referee shows to the player when cautioning them and give the second chance to introspect themselves. c) in Indonesian language we can take the example Gonzales menanduk bola, we know that Gonzales is a human and he did the work which is did by an animal buffalo. In this case, menanduk have same meaning with the other, because it refers to an action using a head, in human we call menyundul and in buffalo we cal menanduk. * Anthropomorphic metaphor The person who is interested toward this kind of metaphor is Giambattista Vico, he said that in every language the most part of expression refer to inanimate, compared by transferring from any part of body, sense, and also the emotion of human being. For example: a) in Indonesian language: jantung kota, bahu jalan, mulut sungai, etc. b) in English language muscle comes from Latin language musculus that means ‘little mouse’. Animal metaphor This category applied for animal or inanimate types, many plants using animal’s name to call them. For example: a) lidah buaya, kumis kucing, jambu monyet, etc. b) in English there are some plants with animal’s name goat’s-beard and dog’s tail. Beside that, there are animal’s name transferred into human being for des cribe humor, irony, and other. For example: si beo, the speaker use this word toward the other because they have same characteristic or their action refer to the animal itself. * From concrete to abstract One of the tendency in metaphor is explaining the abstract into the concrete, when we try to find the abstract word at first we must know the concrete one. For example in English light ‘sinar, cahaya, lampu’ which is concrete, when this word close to the other morpheme they sometimes become abstract like highlights ‘menyoroti’. If it compares to Indonesian language the condition is same, for example the concrete one is ‘sinar, cahaya’, it become abstract metaphor in sorot mata, hidupnya sedang bersinar, ajarannya menyinari dunia, harta yang menyilaukan, and so on. Synaesthetic metaphor This metaphor based on the transferred of one sense to the other sense, for example from sense of hearing to sight, from touch to sound, etc. If we talk about the sound which is warm and cool, we can see that there are the similarities between temperatures with the kind of sounds. The structure of metaphor begin in literary works when the raising of symbolism era. We can see from one of Shakespeare’s work: I see a voice; now will I to the chink To spy an I can hear my Thisby’s face 2. Metonymy Metonymy involves some sort of connection between concepts, but in this case there is no similarity between them, but they are closely linked in some other way. Metonymy can divide into the association they based on. First, metonymy transfer based on spaces and places. The change of meaning the Latin word coxa ‘pinggul’ into France language cuisse ‘pupu;paha’ it explained that pinggul and paha is our part of body which is close and do not have correct constraint. Second, metonymy transfer based on time or temporal. The name of action or event can be transferred into something that predate and follow the change. For example, in English, ‘collation’ now defined into different meaning ‘perbandingan’ and ‘makanan ringan’ where as both of them are relates. Previously, in Catholic ceremony the reading from Collationes Patrum by Cassian usually read before the end of mass, it followed by snack which called collation because the snack related with the reading. So, the name of book followed by the snack that also consume in the close time in mass period. Third, the relation can create the change of metonymy, there are some part that is important but sometime it divide into own category, or we can call it pars pro toto. For example in Indonesia, ‘pasukan baju kuning’ it refers to the group who clean up the road. And the last metonymy is simple and famous because we don’t need the worst and crucial speech. We know that most of the founder named something which they found by their name. For example, the terminology in electricity ampere, volt, ohm named by the founder Andre Ampere, Count Allessandro Volta, and Georg Simon Ohm. . Popular Etymology Etymology is the branch of linguistics that studies the origin and development of words and other linguistic forms. The examples of the areas that are studied include the earliest origins of a word, how its meanings and connotations have changed, the meanings and origins of its component parts, whether or how it has spread to other languages, and how its meaning or use has b een influenced by other words. The history of a word also is called its etymology. For example, France language forain become English foreign which come from Latin foranus, one of derivative from Latin foris ‘tidak dengan; ke luar negeri; the nature meaning is the foreign as we used in English. 4. Ellipsis Words which often occur side by side are act to have a semantic influence on each other. We have already sees an example of this in the history of negation in French. The commonest form which this influence takes in ellipsis. In a set phrase made up of two words, one of these it omitted and its meaning it transferred to its partner. For example, in Jakarta’s dialect ‘tidak tahu’, sometimes just utter in ‘tahu’. B. The consequences of the change of meaning * The change in the area of meaning Many older writer divide change of meaning in three categories, there are: extension, restriction, and the last that do not grouped into both of them. The division can called as â€Å"logical division† they also has some weaknesses, although the division is simple and easy. The division does not give clearly describing about the formal form in causes or the background how it can be changed. And then, the third division just grouped because can’t let in first and second division. Truthfully the basic is the meaning become wide or narrow and continuously by the time. 1). Restriction This change make the meaning of certain word become restrict and the intense become more variable. For example, English ‘poison’ means racun, first the word come from ‘potion’ that means ‘beer’ because beer can damage our body and sometimes make somebody die. Later poison just use to refer the drink that can make somebody die, not to all of beer. 2). Extension In extension meaning, the word can be applied in large contexts by following the time the intense become weaker and something that referred become smaller. For example, arriver in France and arrive in English, this word come from Latin arripare, it become ripa ‘tepi sungai; pantai’ because it refers to the coming of someone. * The changes in evaluation: pejorative and ameliorative 1). Pejorative The change caused the word become lower or negative than before, for example: ‘perempuan’ come from ‘empu’ that means ‘ibu jari’ it should be has higher meaning. But nowadays, ‘perempuan’ is lower if compare to ‘wanita’. 2). Ameliorative The change caused the word become higher and positive than before, for example: ‘minister’ at first define as ‘minus or slave’ but nowadays the meaning become higher into ‘the person who stayed in governmental system. CONCLUSION The Nature of Semantic Change, there is must always be some connection, some association between the old and the new meaning, association is the necessary condition of semantic change. Meaning is determined by three factors: the objective reference (the referent), the subjective apprehension (the subject, i. e. the speaker or the hearer) and the traditional range (the word). Any change has as its immediate cause a change in one of these three relations. Types of semantic change: Similarity of the senses (metaphor), Contiguity of the senses (metonymy), Similarity of the names (folk etymology), Contiguity of the names (ellipsis), all of these types is changes that occur with time. No Dress Code Policy at De La Salle Essay Example

No Dress Code Policy at De La Salle Essay Example No Dress Code Policy at De La Salle Paper No Dress Code Policy at De La Salle Paper We then thought of a topic that would benefit the Benildeans. The purpose of the proposal is to speak in behalf of all SDA students regarding our complaint about the dress code policy of the college. To come up with such topic is not an easy task for it is Just normal for a college or any institution to have a dress code policy. However, we pushed through with it because we want to open the eyes of those in authority to the fact that De La Salle College of Saint Benilde is an art school. The group came up with such topic because they believe that Benilde is a place for artists. It is in that place that they should be given the chance to act freely and that includes wearing whatever they want to. The college should be the first to understand the students way of expressing themselves even if it means supporting their not-so-normal fashion sense. To be able to defend the topic properly, the group made a research about anything that could help them expound the topic. They focused more on fashion since the topic is closest to it. They also enumerated the attires that the college considers inappropriate and stated their main thoughts about the reasons of students for wanting to wear whats prohibited. In addition, the group also stated the reasons why a certain school has to have a ress code policy and why Benilde should not be included in the list. The group based their conclusion on what stood out among all the information that they gathered. The De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) School of Design and Arts(SDA) is a 14-storey academic complex, located at 950 Pablo Ocampo Street (formerly Vito Cruz), and about 350 meters away from the Taft Campus. It was envisioned as a home for a new generation of Filipino artists and designers who are equipped with technical expertise and global competenciesIt is, by far, one of the most ambitious rojects of De La Salle Philippines. [pic] Just like what is stated above, SDA campus is home of the artists. Degree programs of the college include Production Design, Filmmaking, Animation, Multimedia Arts, Arts Management, Music Production, Dance, Photography, Architecture, Industrial Design, Interior Design, and lastly, the course that is related to the project proposal, Fashion Design and Merchandising. Since the college offers the most non-traditional courses in the Philippines, it is basically normal for it to also be unique when it comes to the policies. It is supposed to let the students express ho they really are especially when they are inside the campus. One way of proving that the college really wants to support the Benildeans in their extraordinary talents is by allowing them to wear what they want. Most unfortunately, the college has this so-called dress code policy. Section 1. 3. 3 of CSBs Student Handbook says that students are to dress in modest, decent, good taste. Any attire which tends to scandalize or offend others in the academic community, such as, but not limited to backless, midriff, tubetops and see-through attires are prohibited. Yes, CSB only wants whats best for its students but it also has to realize that Benildeans have a small possibility of offending one another in terms of clothes since they share the same passion. Here are some of what the college considers inappropriate: See-Through Fabric tops where undergarments can be seen Plunging Neckline necklines exceeding 4 inches below the collarbone Racerback Mini Skirts and Short Shorts It is given that the pictures posted here are really revealing. However, it is also important to note that the people who are fond of wearing those attires have a reason for it. Its not like that they wear those clothes for the sake of getting attention. Some people like wearing racerback tops because they are into sports. Maybe they feel even more close to sports whenever they are in that attire. Others may also Just want a sporty image. There are also people who like wearing mini skirts and short shorts. The reason for this is simple those are what make them feel comfortable about themselves. Nowadays, people are not into wearing pants anymore because they find it hard to move around. See-through fabrics are also loved by some. It can be because of the style or the uniqueness they bring. According to the research, young people nowadays wear shorts with no malice and yet the old people find malice in these so-called shorts. The group really thinks that people live in a modern generation already. The past and the present are two different things. If people will continue living in the past, how will the world move forward? Benilde should stop implementing the dress code policy because it is also the main reason why everything about it is an art. And art also means expressing ones self through the clothes a person wears. The picture above popped out of the screen while the group was doing a research bout fashion. Obviously, the three ladies in that poster are wearing something that is strictly prohibited in the college. How will the students give Justice to their project Fashion Design and Merchandising? It is really amazing how Fashion Design students can survive despite of the dress code. If they can attain success even with the dress code policy interrupting their way, how much more if it is not implemented? If they can completely express themselves or show off their talents without thinking of being sent to the Office of Student and Behavior? Benildeans keep on complaining about he dress code because they know very well that they have the right to fght for what they think is right. They chose Benilde because they think that the college is going to support them all the way, that it is not like other universities that know nothing but academics, that the college is aware that its students have a unique taste in everything, and a lot more. The group made a research about the importance of dress code policy. Here are some of the gathered information: Establishing a dress code will benefit greatly by enabling unity. There are other ways to express yourself. Definitely a dress code is part of being educated. Dress code can help reduce the potential for conflict. Being made fun of is not cool. Ready for the workforce. Dress code enforces motivation and discipline. Schools should enforce dress codes because some clothing can be distracting and offensive to other students. Better looking environment. Dress code helps us not look trashy. It removes a lot of problems. Modest attire is a plus. School is a place to get good education. It is better to be yourself after school. Rules are set to be followed and are set for a reason. ery different from other schools. It is an art school which makes the students even more unique. One of the things stated above is that dress code helps us not look trashy. If Benildeans were to be asked about that statement, they would all say the same thing and that is trashy look is fashion. It is also included in the list that being made fun of is not cool. Benildeans surely dont make fun of one another. As Benildeans, the group is confident to say that there is a sense of respect in the college. There are lots of wardrobes in the college and instead of Judging the fashionistas, they are being looked up to because of their courage to stand out. They are not afraid to be labeled as weird because they know that the community understands where they are coming from. If the person reading this certainly does not have an artistic side, this will really be hard to understand. But if those in authority will Just try to open their minds, this will all make sense. The group found an online article written by Luke Larson that explains exactly why schools should not have a dress code policy. If you were a student attending a school with a dress code where everyone wore the ame stuff, how would you feel? Youd probably Just feel like another average boring kid who doesnt stick out at all and might not even get noticed or acknowledged by other students and even teachers. Schools shouldnt have a dress code such as khaki pants and a polo shirt. If there is a dress code, kids wont be able to express their creativity in the clothes they wear. For example, a kid at my school whos name is Max Bush is very creative in the clothes he wears. Sometimes its a purple dress shirt with athletic shorts or nurses pants and a t-shirt. If there was a dress code, he wouldnt be ble to be creative anymore. Without the ability to be creative in the clothes kids wear, theyll Just feel like another face in the crowd. You wouldnt stick out at all and some people may not be able to recognize you from some angles. The author got everything right. Although he is referring to kids, same goes through the teens or the adults for that matter. When there is a dress code policy, students tend to shy away from who they really are. They are not given the chance to have their own identity since they are being ruled by the school. They unintentionally become like the rest. And because De La Salle College of Saint Benilde is an art school, an expression of ones self is very necessary. Benildeans are not supposed to be equally the same because the artistic sides within them are different. The photo caught the groups attention because it seems like whoever made it wants the college to realize that its a school of fashion. And everyone knows that fashion is something not all people appreciate because of its uniqueness. A person really into fashion is capable of doing crazy things Just to show his or her love for it. He/she can even have the courage to show off some skin. Those who have a deep just to give Justice to the fashionistas and fashionistos most famous line: Fashion is passion. The group even encountered a Facebook page entitled AB-FDM: Fashion is my passion, obsession, and possession. For a person to say that, its like telling that fashion is his/her life and that he/she will die without it. The facebook page is Just a proof of how some people give importance to it. Since Benilde decided to offer such program(s), its the schools responsibility to extend its patience to the students who are very unmindful of the dress code.

The Nominative Case - Learning Latin

The Nominative Case - Learning Latin In Latin (and many other languages) the Nominative Case (cÄ sus nÃ… minÄ tÄ «vus) is the subject case. There is nothing very tricky about it- that simply means that the Nominative form is what is used in a given sentence as a subject. When you look up a noun (in Latin noun is nÃ… men which is traditionally defined as a part of speech that names persons, places or things) in a Latin-English dictionary, the first form listed is the Nominative Singular. The same is true of pronouns, which stand in place of nouns and adjectives (modifiers of nouns and pronouns), both of which are also subject to declension. In English, some words are only used in the plural, but these are few and far between. The same is true in Latin. For the vast majority of Latin nouns, the first form you see in the dictionary is the Nominative Singular, followed by an ending for the genitive, and the gender of the noun. (Note: What you see following the initial word is slightly different for adjectives and pronouns.) Nominative Singular Example: Puella (1) Dictionary form: Puella, : The girl is good - Puella bona est. Nominative Plural and Paradigms As is true for the other cases, the Nominative Case can be used in both the singular and the plural. For puella, that plural is puellae. Traditionally, paradigms put the Nominative Case at the top. In most paradigms, the singulars are in the left column and the plurals in the right, so the Nominative Plural is the top right Latin word. Nominative Case Abbreviation Nominative is usually abbreviated Nom or NOM. Since there is no other case beginning with an n, it can be abbreviated N. Note: Neuter is also abbreviated n, but neuter is not a case, so there is no reason to be confused. Nominative Forms of Adjectives Just as the dictionary form of the noun is the Nominative Singular, so it is also for the adjectival form. Usually, the adjectives have a Nominative Singular masculine followed by either feminine and then neuter, or just neuter in words where the masculine is also the feminine form. Compare:(3) Noun: puella, -ae girl(4) Adjective: bonus, -a, um good This adjective dictionary-style entry shows that the masculine singular of the Nominative Case is bonus. The feminine singular of the Nominative Case is bona as was shown in the example about the girl (puella bona est.) An example of a third declension adjective showing the masculine/feminine form and the neuter is: (5) Finalis, -e - final Nominative With To Be Verbs If you were to use the sentence The girl is a pirate, both the words for girl and pirate would be nouns in the Nominative Singular. That sentence would be puella pirata est. Pirate is a predicate nominative. The actual sentence was puella bona est where both the noun for girl, puella, and the adjective for good, bona, were in the Nominative Singular. Good is a predicate adjective. Pay for performance increases job satisfaction Essay

Pay for performance increases job satisfaction - Essay Example Another point is that with financial reward workers tend to remain more reliable and honest in work. A contrasting view to this is that the employees can take the employer for granted and also they can end up in accidents due to excessive work. The paper will analyse all four different views and ultimately try to assess whether the pay for performance will give satisfaction to workers. The first argument states that workers are more satisfied when they are paid for their performance. The employees work more sincerely if they are give incentives for their work. Employees do respond well to incentives for better performance and to recognition for doing especially outstanding work. Employers shouldn’t ignore incentives if they want great performance from their employees. Workers always look forward for ways to achieve incentives for their handwork. Achen(2007)claims that â€Å" Properly designed performance incentive programs not only employees develop or enhance job skills†. The employees become even more committed once they realize that their work is being appreciated by the employer. They will try all the more to be sincere in their job and try to enhance their working skill to bring more productivity. The second argument is that when the employees are paid for performance they bring in more profit to the organization..According to Blinder(1990,p.41), â€Å" Since incentive system pay more to more productive workers, workers who are inherently more productive will tend to sort them towards incentive – using firms†. This shows that incentive giving companies receive more hardworking employees which in turn will increase their productivity.Billikof (2006)states that â€Å" Incentive pay has the potential to increase worker productivity if properly designed and maintained.†When the workers see that they are achieving financial reward for their work they are encouraged more to do better performance .They feel like achieving the goal of

Renewable energy will be the most significant challenge for the oil industry. Explain, by citing three reasons, whether you agree or disagree with this statement - Research Paper Example It is not true that renewable energy will be a challenge for the oil industry because of many factors. The renewable energy requires more infrastructure compared to the petroleum oil (Piotrowiak (2012). This process makes the consumers abandon the renewable sources of energy for oil. The price of oil usually fluctuates. It creates uncertainty in the market. The consumers are subjected to speculation. This process affects the prices of other products given that the industries rely on petroleum oil to run their plant and machinery. The petroleum oil undergoes many processes before obtaining pure oil. However, the other sources of energy like wind energy involves many processes. The transition to the use of electric cars will need an industrial transition from the old model spare parts to the manufacturing of electric vehicle spare parts. The adoption of renewable energy vehicles will require continuous monitoring and control software in order to maintain proper functioning of the vehicle. Thus renewable energy will not be a major challenge for the oil industry. The process will cause an additional cost to the owners of vehicles. According to Chan (2012), the marginal returns from the transport business will drastically reduce. Consequently, many potential investors in the transport will be sent away. The electric vehicles will also require extensive facilities for the safe transmission of electric energy to the intended destination. The transmission facilities will require extra electric energy. The cost of using this form of energy will be high. The common form of renewable component, ethanol, and gasoline are not suitable because of the high oxygen conte nt of the mixture. The high oxygen content makes the mixture unsuitable for pipeline transmission. Safe transmission is financially constraining. The additional costs make the preference of the renewable energy sources
